In the spirit of Spring Cleaning, (because hello! We’re all stuck at home and we might as well take a break from Netflix and Carole Baskin’s missing husband!), let’s actually do something productive. How about showcase a throwback on a great blog I wrote in March 2016. I called it ‘The Make-up Break-up?’

Some of you, (like me!) love make-up. But sadly, it doesn’t last forever. It can get gunky or start separating or actually start to smell. That’s gross. You don’t want it going rancid because of age or causing some sort of bacterial ick. And since most of us are sitting on our asses going abso-fucking-lutely nowhere right now, maybe it’s a good time to assess your stash. You know, clear out the old to make room for brand new and fresh when we all get our life back.

Make-up Info To Know

So here’s that excerpt from my 2016 blog, to share the general rule of thumb for your make-up bag ‘look and smell’ test.

Face: Concealer, foundation and cream blushes will last up to a year. Powders will last two.

Eyes and lips: Eye and lip pencils will last 2 years if you sharpen them often. Liquid eyeshadow can last a year and powder shadows will last two years. Lipstick will last two years and then you run the risk of color changing, separation and overall quality.

Mascara needs to be thrown out after 3 months. Sorry, but you cannot mess with your eyes! Bacteria thrives in a mascara tube, and adding water or saliva (some people do this regularly) into mascara to thin it out or extend its life only increases your risk of infection.

Nail polish: Never opened bottles will last pretty much forever, because air has not been allowed to get in and separate the color. Opened bottles will last about two years.

And Now…

You might be a little lighter in the make-up bag, but you’re better for it. Just think of how fun it will be to shop for new stuff and fall in love with fresh items that will soon become your new favorites!

Keep on keepin’ on that social distancing, folks! Stay well and I’ll see ya next week!
