I adore make-up. I love free samples, free gifts with purchase, trial sizes and great bargains. I’m even signed up with a monthly service that sends me a new make-up bag once a month filled with new things to try.

Once you get bitten by the make-up bug, it’s a fantastic, feminine spiral downward. Everything from browsing Avon catalogs on your lunch hour to spending Saturdays at Sephora….what bliss. Don’t give me fancy dinners, you can keep your flowers.
The way to my heart is Smashbox.

Break-up with make-up: A Handy Guide

What happens when your cosmetic bag, drawer or sissy purse becomes a overstuffed, gunky mess full of old product and eye pencil shavings? Expired make-up can smell bad, cause irritation/infection and even separate and change color or consistency. Not acceptable. It’s time for a cosmetic clean-up. Here are some tips to know what’s what when breaking-up with make-up.

Face: Concealer, foundation and cream blushes will last up to a year. Powders will last two.

Eyes and lips: Eye and lip pencils will last 2 years if you sharpen them often. Liquid eyeshadow can last a year and powder shadows will last two years. Lipstick will last two years and then you run the risk of color changing, separation and overall quality.

Mascara needs to be thrown out after 3 months. Sorry, but you cannot mess with your eyes! Bacteria thrives in a mascara tube, and adding water or saliva into mascara to thin it out or extend its life only increases your risk of infection.

Nail polish: Unopened bottles will last pretty much forever, because air has not been allowed to get in and separate the color. Opened bottles will last about two years. Speaking of polish, have you seen my excellent manicure-at-home post?
