It’s the season for parties and fancy dinners, get togethers with friends and depending on your lifestyle, lots of time en femme! Naturally, you want your nails to look their best. Jagged, unkempt nails aren’t pretty…..but salon visits can be spendy, especially in the winter when funds are often tight. Here are some tips and tricks for a self-manicure that you can do yourself all year long.

Manicure Prep

Don’t ever cut cuticles. About once a week, gently push them back a little after a shower when your cuticles are soft.

File nails in one direction only, not a back and forth motion that can cause tiny splits and tears in the nail.

Following these simple prep steps will ensure that you are ready for the feminine treatment! Now it’s time for color!

Manicure Paint

Never apply any color to a naked nail. Use a sticky base-coat to help color adhere. Apply one coat to the entire nail and then an extra coat to just the top half (and the edge of the tip to seal it), where chips typically happen.

Don’t shake a bottle of polish before you use it, because of the bubbles that can form and then cause an issue in painting. Just roll the bottle between your palms a few times to warm it.

When painting, brush excess off and begin with a swipe down the middle of your nail, and then a swipe on each edge. Seal color across the top edge of the nail. Dry nails with cool air, apply another coat of color. Dry, and then seal with a smooth and shiny top coat, sealing the top edge of the nail.

If you smudge a nail, dip a q tip in a little remover to smooth out the smudge before applying a new layer of color and top coat.

Manicure Maintenance

Wait at least 6 hours after a manicure before doing dishes or taking a shower. I always use gloves if I’m doing dishes, no matter what.

Apply a shiny top coat every 2-3 days to perk up the shine and seal the nail.

Eventually, you’ll need another manicure to remove old polish and start the process again. But taking care of your own nails is something every sissy should be able to do. There have been times when I just don’t have time for an appointment, and that’s when I cart out my little basket of products to do them myself. Some people just won’t spend money in a salon, which is totally fine, too. You’ll never have to, not with these tips!
