One subject that was suggested to me when I was gathering ideas for this Amber Academy Series was about wigs: picking one, wearing one and taking care of it. A wig is an instant change, and a fun way to spice up your look in a flash! Always versatile, you can be demure, brazen, sweet or slutty just by wearing a wig. For sissies and cross dressers that enjoy an instant transformation, this accessory is a must!

How to pick a wig that will work for you

Picking a beautiful wig that’s perfect for you is all about your face. Assess the shape of your face, and you will have an instant help in looking more like a woman. Don’t skimp on quality, not ever. A quality wig might be spendy, but it is well worth the cost.

Round face Look for wig styles for something longer than chin length. You want something that adds height at the crown, and/or nything with an off-center part. Stay away from rounded styles that end at the chin.

Square face- Anything short to medium length and anything layered would be a good choice. Styles with height at the crown, curls or waves work well. Avoid center parts, wigs that are long and straight and anything that ends at the jaw.

Pear face- Try a classy shag style or anything that adds volume at the crown. Just make sure you shy away from blunt, jaw-length cuts.

Diamond face- A bob hairstyle with bangs or some fringe will look great on you! Avoid any styles with alot of height on the top or volume on the sides.

Heart face- Try a sassy pageboy or a layered cut that adds volume at the chin. Stay away from choppy, short styles.

Oblong face- You’ll look great in short and medium styles, side parts and wispy bangs. Avoid from too much volume at the crown or all-one-length cuts.

Oval face- Lucky you! You can wear almost any style, but try wigs that are off the face. No heavy bangs.

Use a cotton liner or cap underneath your wig during use to be comfortable. These can help keep your head warm in the winter and absorb sweat that is bound to happen with wig use. There are products online to look at and consider. You definitely want to make sure that you aren’t itchy and going crazy. Definitely not a good look!

Taking care of the wig you love

It’s not enough to pick your best look. Proper care is essential to maintaining shape and looking great en femme.

1) Only use products that are meant for the type of hair in your wig. Natural hair wigs can be washed with human hair shampoo, but never use these (or any human hair styling products) on a synthetic wig. Synthetic wigs have their own hair products.
2) To avoid stretching and damaging synthetic hair fibers, do not brush a synthetic wig when it’s wet.3) Keep synthetic wigs away from heat sources, such as barbeques, curling irons, flat iron, hot rollers or cooking stoves.
3) Store wigs on a wig head or mannequin to keep the shape.

Wigs are a fast and fun way to feel feminine, sexy and glamorous beyond barrettes, bows and curlers in your natural hair.
Take some time to look at what’s available and consider just how a wig could change your look!
